Northwest Rapper Angela Angel’s and GRAMMY-Nominated Pianist/Producer Josh Rawlings release ‘Grey Star’ featuring vocalist Katrina Kope
Their music sends a message of hope and courage to shine in these isolating and polarizing times
SEATTLE, WA – Today, Seattle-based artist and rapper Angela Angel’s and GRAMMY-Nominated pianist/producer Josh Rawlings debut their second single release Grey Star featuring the soulful vocals of Katrina Kope. The song, like their first release Chosen Love (feat. Otieno Terry & DefSeed), is a product of a homegrown Northwest collaboration.
Written to a beat originally titled “Dilla Land” (an homage to J. Dilla), Angela chose this song out of countless rough sketches saying, “I felt connected to it right away because it was a feel-good that I wanted to write a dark aesthetic to.” To add to the darker lyrical landscape, Rawlings penned the chorus while grappling with addiction and family trauma. Grey Star aims to send an uplifting message in times that feel the heaviest.
Their first recording session happened on June 23rd, 2018 at Hall of Justice Studio in Fremont. They started the session with an eight-piece gospel choir featuring alumni from Seattle’s Total Experience Gospel Choir. Josh recalls the experience saying, “This was my first recording session as a producer and the choir made the hair stand up on arms and gave me goosebumps. To me, this is the universal human sign that what you’re doing in that moment is something special beyond your wildest dreams.”
Angela raps lyrics with imagery of her life experiences while realizing she is in the act of diving deeper to find inner peace. The result of this song lands between summertime feel-good/nostalgic hip-hop of the 90’s. Angela and Josh are planning their debut performances for late 2020/early 2021, and are primed to release more singles in the near future.

About Josh Rawlings:
Josh Rawlings is a GRAMMY-Nominated Pianist, Songwriter & Producer living near Seattle. Best known for his Hip-Hop/Pop piano sound on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ albums, Josh has been working as a premier studio-musician, performer and songwriter in the Northwest for over 20 years.
Starting his passion for piano at the young age of 3, Josh’s passion and natural-born talent in music grew to eventually bring him to find a deep interest in the study of Jazz Music in High School and later in College. Josh’s cites his musical mentor, Louise Rose (Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson), as the one he watched perform and instantly knew “I had to make a career for myself in music...because I sincerely wanted to learn how to play music with that depth of effortless mastery and contagious visible joy!”
Studying at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Josh graduated in 2005 as a Jazz Piano Performance Major and studied with such renown jazzmen as Hadley Caliman (Grateful Dead, Dexter Gordon, Santana), Randy Halberstadt (Ernestine Anderson, Sheila Jordan, Kevin Mahogany), Three-Time Latin GRAMMY-Nominee Jovino Santos Neto (Hermeto Pascoal, Bill Frisell) and the legendary Julian Priester (Herbie Hancock, Sun Ra, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane).
After graduating Josh deeply immersed himself in the developing Neo-Soul/Jazz Scene that was percolating in Seattle at the time. “It was such an interesting melting-pot time in Seattle where everyone was trying to play with everyone and blur all the genre lines. I loved it because it just allowed me to feel like I could jam and make music with anyone. I made a lot of friends in that formative time after school, while trying to find my own sound and navigate making a living doing the music I love.”
After nearly 10 years of working tirelessly as a gigging musician, the cross pollination and collaboration amongst the music pools in Seattle eventually led to the tipping-point in his career to working with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis on their album The Heist. It was at this time that Josh had the opportunity to perform on ground-breaking songs like Same Love, further dialing in what he’d later call his “Signature sound...a sort of cinematic and animated way of bringing life to whatever music is being thrown at me...ie. essentially just really vibing and jamming.” Josh continues to work with both Ben (Macklemore) and Ryan, and many other respected producers/songwriters in the Northwest.
Josh is married and a father of 3 and continues to pursue his passions of writing and performing music. In recent years Josh can be seen working as a producer and collaborator with such artists as Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, Tyler Dopps, Hobo Johnson, Travis Thompson, Kesha, Angela Angel’s, Jessie Sawyers & Ian Campbell. Josh is poised to release exciting new music in 2020 as he makes his first public debut as a Producer and Songwriter.

About Angela Angel’s
Angela Angel’s is an artist and rapper raised in the foothills outside of Los Angeles. Although Seattle, Washington has been her home where she has developed her sound, she continues to draw from her Caribbean roots to create music. Her life path has led her to music and teaching at community college in rural Washington.
“I spent a lot of my youth writing poetry and found inspiration throughout. Life continues to be a source of inspiration, and music remains as a medium I use to reflect upon it.”
Angela enjoys writing music to different genres and likes focusing on the mood of the song. In 2018 she was looking for a new producer and connected with Josh Rawlings to create some new songs with her. “I like working with different producers and searching for new sounds to put meaningful lyrics to.”
Josh and Angela have worked on music for the past two years, collaborating with several of Seattle’s top Jazz musicians to bring a live and organic sound and fuse it with Hip-Hop. Angela grew up with a deep love for reading poetry. “I saw Maya Angelou speak at an event when I was 11 years old. Shortly after I read her book I Know why the Caged Bird Sings and I admired her strength to tell her story and be authentic at the same time. When I started making music in 2010 that’s all I ever wanted to do. I didn’t grow up singing. I grew up writing. Yet one day I made a decision for my writing to be heard, music was my way.”
